Theme: Random

My home is slowly evolving into the sanctuary I envision in my mind. Atmosphere has always been important to me. I like to feel comfortable and have other feel at ease when they come visit me. A home can say a lot about a person.

Now that summer is on the way I've removed the sliding doors to the greenroom-ish area of my apartment. Since day one I have imagined myself and my partner (whoever that may be :) sitting out there sharing coffee and reading on a sunny Sunday morning. Ivy will be hanging down from the cloths rack above out heads and there will be beautiful flowers and bush green plants all along the windows...

That dream is getting closer. I took a clipping of ivy and got that started last week. It's actually taking too! I grabbed a discarded sheet of glass from work and put it on the Tupperware crate I moved here with. Those two bulbs next to me will soon be in full bloom and the big vase of reed stems are the leftovers from the ones decorating my apartment. Total cost? Large vase 10, bulbs 5, pots 6, ivy 0, reeds 0, glass 0... total = 21 bucks. I think decorating on a budget is way more fun :D

109|365 Bad Day ~ Rain, originally uploaded by comatosed.

Theme: Rain

It wasn't really a bad day, it was an excellent day because I did a proper shoot in the rain!

It was just pissing all day so I figured why not make the best of it and try shooting in the rain. It was a little scary bringing my DSLR and brand new wide angle lens out into the storm but luckily I had my Z-28 Professional Rain Shield by Como.

--- Lessons Learned ---
1. Even though it was heavy rain, it didn't show up well on the wide angle at low shutter speeds (I had to apply KaCey97007's texture - thanks for that!). Must experiment and figure out how to capture rain. I'm guessing flash and a high shutter speed...

Rode part way to Jinju where a bunch of us got together for a buddies bachelor party. It was kick-ass ride and a kick-ass time!

--- Setup ---
This was by far my worst 365 to date. I was biking to the bachelor party and saw this farmer burning his grass. I wanted to get a shot standing in the smoke but by the time I was set up it had pretty much cleared. I got one shot off the whole day, and when I got home I saw everything about it was bad... the angle, lighting, color, composition, everything! 092|365 Annie Leibovitz at Work ~ Learning

Theme: Learning

The book I'm reading is Annie Leibovitz at Work. My sister gave it to me for Christmas and it's the first time I've sat down and gave it a serious read. It's a biography, but there is a lot that can be gained from Annie's photos, stories, philosophy, methodology and insights into photography.

She really is a master at capturing the essence of a person on film, a skill I want to learn above all else. What surprised me was that she spent a minimum of two days and sometimes even months with her subjects getting to know them.

Perhaps this explains part of the reason I found my photo shoot for Modern English Studio difficult. I was working with people I didn't know, under tight time constraints, all were English teachers, not models, and they weren't being paid for their time. In retrospect, a recipe for unnatural photos.

Another thing that appeals to me about Annie's photos is that while the earlier ones were self admittedly lacking in technical ability, she captures interesting moments none the less. She always tries a new approach contrary to what the majority of photographers next to her are doing. I focus too much on the technical, and often forget to LOOK, to SEE what is going on around me. She puts people at ease, by taken their ideas and embellishing on them. I sometimes get too caught up with my own concepts and fail to listen to what my client wants.

So this photo is me trying to simply capture a moment rather than create one.

--- Lessons Learned ---
1. Try to balance technical skills with people skills

A bit of a funny story behind this shot. The first church I visited, Korean church goers kept coming over to me to ask where I was from, what I was doing and if I had time for coffee or dinner. This made it very hard for me, impossible in fact, to stand around wielding a huge cleaver.
